Description Encouraging the conservation of the character and traditions of our market town The Society has worked to save several fine buildings from demolition or unsightly modification, and has successfully proposed sympathetic restoration of external features. It supports and participates in events such as the annual Carnival and the seasonal fairs.
Promoting study of the history of Wokingham and interest in our heritage We support the Town's History Group that publishes, books and leaflets, organises talks and exhibitions and established the popular "Town Walks" scheme.
Welcoming new development and business which enhances and invigorates the town and constructively opposing measures which do not. The Society reviews planning applications and development schemes, makes recommendations to the local authorities and is consulted by the District Council's Planning Officers. It holds public meetings and exhibitions to raise awareness and to stimulate debate, and supports the Wokingham Town Centre Management Initiative.
Proposing improvements to the environment and amenities of the town The Society initiates and contributes to proposals to improve the environment and the cultural facilities of the town. It reports and monitors infringements of local bye-laws, rights of way and public open space.
